TYPES OF TREATMENTS
While there is no universal way to relieve migraine pain, there are several remedies for symptomatic relief.1 It's important to note that the effectiveness of remedies varies from individual to individual.2
Migraine treatment options can be divided into two categories:
1. PREVENTIVE MEDICATIONS:
According to research, approximately 38% of migraine patients would benefit from preventive medicine. However, less than 13% take such treatment.1
Preventive medications are taken daily to reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.1 They are recommended for people who experience frequent, severe, or long-lasting migraines that significantly affect their quality of life.1,2
Preventive medications include CGRP inhibitors, beta-blockers, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants.1
CGRP inhibitors are a newer class of medication that target a specific protein involved in migraine attacks. By consistently blocking the CGRP pathway, these medications can reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks over time.4
Beta-blockers and anticonvulsants work by stabilising the excitability of brain cells.5
Antidepressants help to affect the levels of certain neurotransmitters involved in a migraine attack.5
2. RELIEF MEDICATIONS:
Used to stop or reduce the intensity of migraine attacks that have already started. They include CGRP inhibitors, NSAIDs and Triptans.2,3
By blocking the CGRP pathway, CGRP inhibitors can quickly alleviate the pain and other symptoms associated with a migraine attack.4
NSAIDs help reduce inflammation and pain.6
Triptans target specific neurotransmitters that are involved in the development of migraine attacks.3
Lifestyle changes such as stress reduction, regular exercise and getting enough sleep may also help reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.1,2,3
